A Cemetery Rooted in History
Shiro Cemetery Association is proud to preserve a place of history, remembrance, and community. Established in the mid-19th century, Shiro Cemetery has served generations of families and continues to provide a peaceful resting place for loved ones.
With interments dating from the mid-1800s to the present day, the cemetery reflects the rich history and enduring spirit of the Shiro community.
Burial Process
1830s — The Early Settlers
Pioneer families began settling the area during the 1830s, establishing communities that would become an important part of the region's history.
Prairie Plains
The community of Prairie Plains grew with churches, businesses, and other establishments, becoming a thriving local settlement.
1908 — The Railroad Arrives
When the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railroad was completed approximately three miles west of Prairie Plains, the community relocated closer to the railroad.
Shiro Is Established
As families and businesses moved to the railroad location, the community became known as Shiro, continuing to grow and prosper.
A Legacy of Remembrance
Shiro Cemetery was established in the middle of the 19th century when J.L. Mansfield and his wife, Eveline, donated the land for use as a burial ground.
The property was deeded to local County Judge George D. Neal for the use of the Baptist Church and the surrounding community. Since that time, the cemetery has remained an important part of the community, providing a peaceful and dignified place for families to honor and remember their loved ones.

For more than a century, Shiro Cemetery has remained a lasting part of the community. The cemetery holds interments dating from the mid-1800s to the present day, connecting generations of families through history, remembrance, and shared community heritage.
