Shiro Cemetery Association
The area has a rich history of pioneers settling the area during the 1830’s. Pioneer families settled in the area establishing a community named Prairie Plains along with Red Top.
Prairie Plains prospered with churches, a store, bar, etc. until the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railroad built a railroad about 3 miles west of Prairie Plains which was completed in 1908. The Prairie Plains community uprooted and moved the 3 miles to where the railroad had been built. The community then became Shiro. Commercial businesses soon followed.
The Shiro Cemetery was established in the middle of the 19th Century. The land was donated by J.L. Mansfield and his wife Eveline. They deeded the property to the local County Judge George D. Neal to be used as a burial ground by the Baptist Church and the surrounding community.
The Cemetery holds interments dating from the mid-1800s to the present day.
